2 out of 5 stars messy layout   February 24, 2009

After reading all the good reviews on Amazon i thought to buy this book myself.
I have been having guinea pigs myself for over 16 years but read through the reviews and noticed this one was good even for experienced handlers.

But i am actually quite disappointed.
No one mentions anything regarding the messy layout. There are only about 8 chapters, but finding the sub-chapters (something as important as eg Food) isnt clear as they are only listed at the back.
I am sure there is a lot of thorough information in this book, but there are so many (big) photos in this book that reading around them makes hard work.

On the positive note: The book is full of (mostly) pretty photos which is great and its writing style is easy to read.

But if you want to buy it for a clear informational reference book I would not recommend it.

This book is a must if you haven't kept Guineas before. It's written by the foremost authority on these delightful creatures.
Full of useful practical advice, and has been invaluable for us.
If you want a pet that is less work than a dog, and more fun than a cat, I can recommend a Guineapig. This book is an essential companion.

5 out of 5 stars This book is vital to guinea pig owners   July 23, 2003

The author, who is a rodentologist with a huge personal collection of guinea pigs, knows more about guinea pigs than most vets. The information contained could be vital for the health of your pet, this I have learnt from personal experience. For example, the book covers teeth clipping whereby anaesthetic is NOT used however a vet would routinely use it with the potential death of the guinea pig. It covers absolutely everything there is to know from choosing, housing, feeding, ailments and behaviour. Full of colour pictures and is ideal for the complete beginner or the experienced owner. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars An ideal book for the new Guinea Pig owner   April 28, 2002

A delight to read! I am now fully equipped to enter the world of the Guinea Pig, secure in the knowledge that everything I need to know (and a bit more) is included in this excellent book. The author's enthusiasm for these animals is infectious and his text easy to understand without being condescending. The full-colour photographs are well thought out too, from the cute to the infected - I know now that I will recognise and be able to treat most of my piggies' day-to-day ailments.
